Top 10 Warning Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Condition in Youth

Parent Heart Watch (PHW), the national voice solely dedicated to protecting youth from sudden cardiac arrest and preventable sudden cardiac death, is commemorating its 10th anniversary by distributing“10 Lists of 10” over the next 10 months to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in youth.

This month’s list focuses on the Top 10 Warning Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Condition. According to PHW Executive Director Michele Snyder it is important to pay attention if your child complains of any one of these symptoms. “It is important to be diligent and follow up with a physician as soon as possible. Share your family and personal history so that the doctor has as much background information as possible,” said Snyder.

Top 10 Warning Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Condition in Youth



1. Fainting or seizure during or after physical activity



2. Fainting or seizure resulting from emotional excitement, emotional distress or startle



3. Unexplained fainting or seizures



4. Chest pain or discomfort/racing heartbeat



5. Unusual shortness of breath



6. Unusual fatigue or tiredness



7. Dizziness/lightheadedness during or after physical activity



8. Family history of heart disease



9. Family history of unexpected sudden death during physical activity or during a seizure



10. Family history of any other unexplained sudden death of an otherwise healthy family member under age 30

Parent Heart Watch was founded in 2005 by four mothers who lost a child to sudden cardiac arrest. Today the organization serves as the national leader for SCA advocates working tirelessly in their own communities to prevent SCA. Members include parents who have lost a child to SCA, parents who have a child that survived SCA or is living with a heart condition, young SCA survivors, medical and allied health professionals and other action-oriented advocates.
