The family law firm, GoransonBain, is dedicated to helping clients make the best decisions under difficult circumstances in times of separation and divorce. It is this passion for making a positive difference in the lives of others that motivated the firm to join forces with VMLC and provide support for its programs that change lives through literacy.

A team of lawyers, paralegals, and administration staff worked with preschoolers and their parents at the Vickery Meadow Campus of VMLC to create artwork that would be auctioned at a fundraiser for the non-profit organization. Under the direction of Beth E. Maultsby, GoransonBain’s managing partner, and an accomplished abstract artist, the group created art projects using shaving cream marbling; suminagashi for kids (Japanese paper marbling technique); rubber cement and water colors; and bouncy ball sensor bag painting.

“Seeing the children at the learning center – the sparkle in their eyes, their enthusiasm, and the hope in their mothers’ eyes – it was simply wonderful to be a small part of helping grow their program,” said Thomas P. Goranson, founding member of the Texas family law firm. The fundraising event was also uplifting for the members of GoransonBain to work together as a team to solicit, create and auction the art. “Collegial respect and strong camaraderie are core tenants of our culture,” said Maultsby. “We enjoy and value the opportunity to gather as a team and support meaningful causes in our community.”

Held at the GoransonBain corporate offices the Art with Heart benefit was a huge success. Close to $ 11,000 was raised to support educational programs at VMLC. “It was gratifying to have the opportunity to open the doors of GoransonBain and invite professionals, colleagues, friends and family members to the Art with Heart event and say ‘thank you’ for making it possible for the firm to fulfill its goal of servicing clients and support our community at the same time,” added Maultsby.

Annual Orange County Conference to Draw Hundreds to Vanguard University in the Name of Human Trafficking

One of Orange County’s most rapidly growing forms of crime, human trafficking, will bring hundreds together at the annual Ensure Justice Conference on March 6-7, 2015, held at Vanguard University. The yearly conference is open to the public, registration required.

“A few years ago not many people even knew about human trafficking – now there are more than a thousand organizations undertaking anti-trafficking work. This growing awareness is why the Ensure Justice Conference is so essential for those thousands of practitioners, professionals, community leaders, and emerging student leaders,” said Dr. Sandra Morgan, director of the Global Center for Women and Justice at Vanguard University.

This year’s conference will focus specifically on four principles: coordination, collaboration, capacity, and compassion. Keynote speakers at the Costa Mesa conference will include officials from Homeland Security Investigations, the Orange County Department of Education, and the Orange County Social Service Agency, amongst others. Discussion topics will include anti-human trafficking, trauma-informed victim-centered care, gangs and ways to partner with law enforcement. Expert panels will also address school-based professionals, empowering them to be a safety net, understanding risks to prevent trafficking in local schools.

“School-based professionals are on the front lines, and they can help protect youth from human trafficking when they know what warning signs to look for. It’s vital that education be a partner in this valuable prevention effort,” said Stacy Deeble-Reynolds, prevention coordinator for the Orange County Department of Education, and speaker at this year’s conference.

Attendees of the Ensure Justice Conference will additionally gain a rooted understanding of the nation’s emerging best practices – with top law enforcement, university administrators, health and mental health providers as workshop leaders.

“Justice is not an option for followers of Jesus – it is our faith life,” said Jo Anne Lyon, general superintendent of The Wesleyan Church. “This is our journey of discipleship.” Lyon will also be a featured speaker at the conference.

Officials have estimated 20 to 30 million slaves in the world today. According to the U.S. State Department, 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year. More than 70% are female and half are children. California alone harbors three of the FBI’s 13 highest child sex trafficking areas in the nation: neighboring Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. Human trafficking victims and survivors have been making headlines recently in Orange County, specifically.

How to Use Straightforward Parenting Skills

Unfortunately, I have not found the place that sells parenting skills. It cannot be downloaded from the internet. Parenting skills are acquired over time through experience. The biggest problem is that we tend to replicate how we were raised by our parents. Good or bad, this is not the best way to become a good parent. You have your own individual characteristics and personality coupled with your own strengths and weaknesses. You must learn to parent your own way. An important method to use is rediscovering your inner child or trying to remember what it was like being a child. There will be times when you need to express your disapproval of your child’s actions and attitude, but you do not want to do this in a way that will traumatize your child.

Raising a child is unquestionably a life long commitment. Even after all of your children have grown up and left the house, they will still come to you for guidance. They have to learn that there are consequences for every decision they make. Parenting never stops, whether you realize it or not.

As early as one, your child can start learning independence. You may still think that giving your child what they want is the way to go. Frequently, it is out of your own desire to be liked and sometimes from your own wish that they be spared some of the bad experiences you had as a child. You want to give them the best of everything. This will not achieve anything positive in the long run. Your child will not learn to be responsible and will take advantage of you throughout their life.

Your child, however, should be given acceptance with abundant and unconditional love. You should show your child affection. They tend to be kinder, charitable and best of all responsible. The opposite is true for the parents that gave their children every materialistic want and satisfied every whim. The child becomes immature and selfish. There are several methods you can try. You can put a marble in a jar every time your child starts doing something the first time you ask. When the jar is full, you can have an agreed upon reward that is not monetary. A family outing to the zoo, a trip to Six Flags, any activity that your child will enjoy is better rewards than simply handing him or her money.

If your child wants to argue, do not allow it. You have to remain calm and repeat the rule over and over again. Rules are not up for debate. A timeout is an option, open discussion is for another time. Also, the dinner table is not the place for arguing either. Arguing while eating is physically and emotionally unhealthy. Your goal should be to produce many long lasting good memories while sharing a meal with your family. They should look forward to more of these moments together and enjoying family time. Establish some points or topics for your conversation.

As children, we never wanted ridiculed or scorned. There is no use going back down your own school days and taking it out on your children. Although well intended, helping your child with their homework should be avoided. You will probably find yourself lost and not even understand, since the teaching methods have even changed. Homework is your child’s responsibility. Most parents often think that they know better and that is the biggest part of the problem, we actually don’t. We often disregard ideas simply because of where it originated. Give your child some freedom, so that they can start learning how to be responsible for themselves.

The Rick Herrema Foundation and Environmental Services, Inc. Partner On Environmental Issues To Support Military Family Support Services in North Carolina

With the recent release of the movie American Sniper, filmgoers are learning more about an important issue many military families face. After multiple deployments into dangerous war zones, how do soldiers successfully reintegrate into their military and civilian communities, and most importantly, into their immediate and extended military family upon their return?

A group of military-minded individuals created a 501©(3) non-profit, the Rick Herrema Foundation (RHF), to tackle the issue of military reintegration and military family support services by building a haven called “Rick’s Place.” RHF has partnered with various area businesses, such as Environmental Services, Inc., to begin the development of “Rick’s Place.”

RHF is located on 26 acres of land that is located within five miles of Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina. RHF’s 26-acre campus and its facilities will be open daily and free for military families. The RHF board members plan to offer horseback riding, lake fishing, family gardening plots, an indoor/outdoor playground, a splash pad, art opportunities, and nature trails at this time. A custom-designed modern lodge, will feature a coffee shop, grilling areas, fire pits, outdoor seating and community meeting space. This experience is designed to inspire an atmosphere of relaxation and rejuvenation at the campus, called “Rick’s Place,” and to honor the sacrifice of our military families who continue to deploy in defense of our nation

RHF board members randomly surveyed over 650 military families stationed at Ft. Bragg and they have confirmed the need for the creation of “Rick’s Place” near their homes. When RHF raises the dollars needed for the construction of the facilities, it will be able to provide services to between 1000-1200 military families per month. Currently in a fundraising phase, RHF is moving forward with a variety of community business partners that are volunteering their services.

One of these business partners is Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI). ESI operates out of nine U.S. offices and its team works regionally, nationally and internationally. ESI’s professional environmental consultants provide successful solutions for environmental, natural, cultural and sustainable resource needs in private and public sectors (http://www.esinc.cc).

Recognizing a need for help from ESI’s Raleigh Ecology Services Division, ESI’s Caitlin Sellers asked fellow employee and Ecology project manager Robert Turnbull to become involved in this project. After receiving an enthusiastic “thumbs up” from ESI’s Raleigh office manager Kevin Markham, Turnbull reports that ESI began providing services in 2014 to the Rick Herrema Foundation for the development of their property in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Specifically, to date, ESI has provided a jurisdictional delineation and preliminary coordination with regulatory agencies. Turnbull expects to help with the federal and state permitting process throughout 2015.

In addition, Turnbull asked Thomas S. Speight, Jr., PE, PLS, Associate Partner at Bateman Civil Survey Company in Holly Springs, North Carolina to become involved in this effort. They have generously provided their services to RHF, as well.
