PolyU launches Good Seed programme to drive social innovation

(PRWEB) January 30, 2015

Jointly organized by the Institute for Entrepreneurship (IfE) and Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation (J.C.DISI) of PolyU, the “Good Seed” programme is funded by the Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Fund (SIE Fund). “As the name of the programme suggests, it aims to sow the seeds of community care among our young people, so that they will take the right actions for the betterment of our society,” remarked Mr Nicholas Yang, Executive Vice President of PolyU. “It is our hope that these seeds will be planted deep in their hearts, tenderly nurtured with love and care, and bloom into something good for our future.”

Under the “Good Seed” programme, successful applicants will be nurtured into social innovation implementers (SIIs) through three stages. In the first stage, participants will receive interactive and action-oriented training. The training modules specifically focus on design, technology and business, with an aim to inspire them to become SIIs. Professor Cees de Bont, Dean of School of Design, PolyU, explained, “Training people in design methods and business skills will breed social entrepreneurs who will make communities in Hong Kong more resilient.”

In the next stage, an idea competition will be held to select outstanding social innovation project ideas. In the final stage, each winning team will be granted a total of HK$ 100,000, the “Good Seed Money”, from the SIE Fund for project implementation. Support from PolyU, non-government organizations, as well as mentors from the design, academic, business and industry sectors will be provided to the winning teams. Post programme support including further incubation and support from various PolyU seed funds or other organizations will also be available to projects with long term potential.

By harnessing collective intelligence and resources among stakeholders in the social innovation and entrepreneurship eco-system, the “Good Seed” programme encourages future SIIs to innovate for low-income families, the elderly of limited means, new arrivals, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, single parent families, the homeless and other deserving demographics and communities. Mr Kim A. Salkeld, JP, Secretary-General of the SIE Fund Secretariat, expected that this partnership between SIE Fund and PolyU will help to establish an enduring springboard for business innovation that work to the benefit of this city. He added, “I trust that it will plant new businesses that bring new wealth to this city, wealth that is not just financial, but social, building up the common wealth of our community.”

Whilst the programme has a distinctive emphasis on “Design and Technology”, it is open to students and graduates of all local higher education institutions, as training will be provided to unleash the participants’ creativity and foster the entrepreneurship spirit in them. To commemorate the launching of the “Good Seed” programme, “The Polygon Tree” Co-Creation Workshop was also held today, where paper was collectively folded, creased and combined to form a “polygon tree” by the participants. Muscle Building Tips for Women

While some women may be regularly sweating it out in the gym, they should always be looking to build up some muscle, both to knock some weight and look good. In fact, increasing muscle mass is considered very healthy. Consider going through these pointers and tips that will effectively help you build muscles.

Exercise Tips for Building Muscle

✦ Doing many reps with light weights do not help much. You must stick to doing 5-6 reps per set and ensure that your final rep is tough. Give a gap of 2-3 minutes between each set. With each set, increase the weights. Lifting heavy weights increases your metabolism rate too. So, begin with light weights, but go on increasing them, as per your comfort. You might want to give up in between, but persistent motivation and dedication can help you in your goal.

✦ Also, it is required to perform certain exercises in order to gain muscle. These exercises include dead lifts, bench press, and squats. Others include barbell curls, dumbbell curls, dips, triceps pull down, triceps extension, wrist curls, etc. There are many exercises you can choose from, to build abdominal muscles. Thighs are always a problem area for women, but with compound exercises like leg curls, lunges, and squats, you will be able to tone them up as well. To build leg muscles, the simplest exercise is calf raises.

✦ Working out at least 3 to 5 times a week is important. This gives your body enough time to recover between workouts. Muscles only get stronger during the recuperation period, further helping you in your goal.

✦ Don’t keep exercising in the gym doing several repetitions. It’s not going to help. Try not to spend beyond two hours. Exercising for a very long period will build endurance, but for muscle mass, you need to follow short, hard workouts.

✦ If you wish to do cardiovascular exercises, implement them sparingly. Cardio exercises help knock off body fat, but our aim is to build muscles. Hence, focus on weight training to get faster results.

✦ Consume foods that are rich in carbohydrates. That’s the best way your body is going to get energy after a tough workout. Apart from the carbs, your diet should be rich in proteins too. Proteins should be consumed before and after a workout. You will have to consume 10 to 20 grams of protein, less than an hour before your workout. This will enhance the effect of muscle building. Thus, carbs give you energy and help proteins get delivered to the muscles for building them.

✦ Practice healthy snacking between meals to keep your metabolism moving.

✦ A very important tip would be to consume a lot of water throughout the day.

✦ Remember to measure your body fat, and not your weight. While you are gaining muscles, you are actually gaining weight (as seen on the weighing scale), but you are losing calories from other areas.

✦ Finally, push yourself every time you are working out. Consider appointing a trainer who will help you in your attempt. He/she would also make sure you are doing the right exercises and will guide you from time to time.

You will have to set systematic and reasonable goals in your muscle building endeavor. At the same time, it is important to monitor your achievements regularly. Remember, even small achievements are important.

Toddler Killing Himself with Gun Highlights Theme of Dr. Westman's Book Parent Power

A December 29, 2014, World Values Survey report supports Dr. Westman's theme in his book Parent Power that our society makes it difficult for parents to raise their children by describing the United States as high in “Self-Expression Values” and low in “Rational-Secular Values”. The Survey concluded that Americans are devoted more to getting what they want than to cultivating virtues.

Because the two-year-old boy's father in Tampa did not break a Florida law, he was not charged with a civil or criminal offense, according to the January 22, 2015, Tampa Bay Times. According to astudy Everytown for Gun Safety reported on June 25, 2014, two children die every week from accidental shootings. Because the Tampa two-year-old's loss of life is not an isolated instance, Dr. Westman raises questions about why does the United States, unlike other developed nations, presume that life is so dangerous in our nation that an adult like his father needs to possess and carry concealable guns and to have a loaded gun in his car? These questions expose inconvenient truths about American society that Dr. Westman attributes to current social values.

In Parent Power, Dr. Westman explains why calling attention to the differences between American social and cultural values is more than an academic exercise. Dr. Westman notes, “Although the United States likes to think of itself as a model for the rest of the world, American society actually can be characterized as dehumanizing, materialistic, individualistic, erotogenic, and fascinated by violence.” Dr. Westman points out that conscientious parents know this and must contend daily with these powerful influences on their children.

Dr. Westman calls attentio to the way American society dehumanizes homeless persons who live on the streets as if they were wild animals. In the winter on January 29, 2014, there were 777 homeless persons in comparatively affluent Madison Wisconsin. Of these, 94 were unsheltered outdoors, 11 of whom were veterans and 2 were a parent and child. According to Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, the neglect of Americans with serious mental illnesses costs our nation $444 billion a year─mostly from lost earnings─and consigns millions to lives of suffering, addiction, homelessness, or incarceration. Our jails often place mentally ill offenders in solitary confinement, aggravating their already fragile states.

Dr. Westman notes, “Materialism is evident in the way the wealthy and celebrities are admired more than dedicated volunteers and professionals who serve the public. A person's worth as a human being is judged more by income than contributions to the common good.”

Dr. Westman shows how individualism encouraged by commercial advertising is apparent in the self-centered way in which many live their lives without planning ahead and without considering the impact of their behavior on others.

Dr. Westman notes that erotogenic behavior is evident in the way erotic behavior and language is tolerated and enjoyed in public entertainment. Modesty no longer is seen as a desirable quality, and shame as a socially controlling value has virtually disappeared.

Dr. Westman observes, “Many Americans have become inured to daily news reports of violence and are fascinated by violent videos, games, and movies—the more and the louder the explosions the better.”

Dr. Westman shows how these social values help explain why the United States leads developed nations in child abuse and neglect and trails them in educational achievement.

Dr. Westman notes that until these inconvenient truths are faced when events, such as the Tampa toddler's death, occur, American society will not reflect its underlying cultural values based on the common good and thereby support childrearing.

Texas Lawyers Offer Tips to People Facing Separation and Divorce

Dan Couvrette, the CEO of Divorce Magazine, recently interviewed two of the top family lawyers in Texas – Eric Higgins and Brian Loughmiller from the McKinney law firm of Loughmiller Higgins, P.C. – for a special podcast. “Our goal at Divorce Magazine is to help divorcing people make better, more informed choices as they go through the separation and divorce process,” says Couvrette. “We find that the best way to accomplish these goals is to have professionals like Eric Higgins and Brian Loughmiller share valuable information and advice based on years of having worked in the field of family law.”

During the podcast, Higgins recommends that people should have an exit strategy when leaving the relationship. “It’s one thing to decide that they’re going to get a divorce, but it’s another to have a plan for where they’re going to live, to resolve housing issues if there are children, and to consider expectations are in terms of possession schedules for the children,” he says. Before seeing their attorneys, he suggests that people should try to create a budget as well as attempt to identify and gather documentation for community assets (which are subject to division on divorce) and separate assets (which are not subject to division on divorce). In order to save time and money during the divorce process, Higgins advises clients to gather and organize all documents pertaining to the marriage, property, and children. “We have had clients who brought us boxes of documents that were just thrown into the boxes – completely unorganized,” he says. It is both labour-intensive and expensive to ask a lawyer to sort through and organize boxes of documents, so he suggests that people do as much of the sorting as possible before presenting the documents to their lawyers.

Choosing the right lawyer for a person’s unique situation is the key to a successful divorce process, but most people have no idea how to do this. “The relationship between a family law attorney and his client is a little bit different than the relationship between attorneys and clients in commercial litigation cases or other types of civil litigation, in that it truly is both a business relationship and a personal relationship,” Loughmiller points out. “The client has to feel comfortable – not only with the legal advice they are getting, but also in that there is good communication and that they trust the attorney to look out for their best interests.” Good communication means that sometimes, the attorney has to give the client some bad news, he says. “For instance, a client may want custody of their child, but the lawyer may have to tell them that this isn’t going to happen – perhaps because they travel a lot for work and they won’t be able to devote the time and energy that it takes to be the custodial parent in the judge’s eyes. Building a personal relationship of trust between the attorney and client is very important,” Loughmiller continues. “A client has to walk out of the initial consultation feeling like the attorney is going to advocate for them, but not give them false expectations in an effort to generate a fee.” He says that a client must believe the attorney is somebody they can trust to help them through the separation and divorce process “so that when it’s over, the client can move on with their life, have a good relationship with their children, and continue to operate effectively as a person.”
