Education important for alleviating poverty in Cambodia

In developed countries, citizens enjoy the right – and access to – an education. It is an assurance and priority of first world governments and a part of most children’s upbringing. Step over to a developing country, however, and the situation is vastly different. For developing countries that lack infrastructure, experience corruption in the government and have a majority of citizens that live below the poverty line, education is an important development issue.

This is the situation that faces Cambodia, which is still recovering from the Cambodia Civil War from 1970-1975, and the brutal regime of the Khmer Rouge that followed. The widespread famine, torture, execution and disease inflicted by the Khmer Rouge completed the downward spiral of the once majestic Cambodian empire to its deeply impoverished state. While the country is recovering, it is still one of the poorest countries in South East Asia and faces a long road to recovery.

Of the issues that need to be addressed in Cambodia, education is one of the most important, because it is education that will give Cambodian children the tools to build a brighter future and alleviate the poverty that grips the nation.

But Cambodia is not the only country that desperately needs improved education systems. Creating awareness of the value and importance of education for developing countries needs to be a global initiative aimed at getting all governments on board and committed to making education a priority.

From 2-8 May 2011 people from countries all over the world will come together to support the “The Big Story” Global Action Week. The week is an initiative for people to show their governments how important education is and why governments should support education programs and projects – particularly for the education of women and girls.

– Currently, 69 million children do not go to primary school. Of those 69 million, 54% are girls.

– Universal primary education would cost $ 10 billion a year, which is half the price of what Americans spend on ice-cream.

Global education is an achievable goal. More so, it is the bridge between poverty and a brighter future for all children who live in the developing world – such as the children of Cambodia.

Remember, education is:

– A human right

– A vital means of poverty alleviation

– A responsibility of governments for every country in the world

– An achievable goal.

So get involved in May to help raise awareness, and influence governments of the developing world. Help empower the next generation of Cambodians by encouraging governments to provide & promote quality education.
