Students from Westside Christian Academy Attend Learning about Business (LAB) Camp at Northwood University in Midland

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) July 17, 2014

The students were chosen for their academic skills and their desire to one day become successful entrepreneurs. The dynamic program is in its 35th year and is geared for business-minded high school sophomores and juniors.

During the week-long camp students were taught by industry professionals and participated in a computer-simulated marketplace where they learned how to run their own company and be their own boss—all while gaining experience in product development, marketing, sales, production, inventory, advertising, human resources and management. LAB participants also had the opportunity to network with successful entrepreneurs and tour the world headquarters of major corporations; opportunities that provided them with insight and skills which will last a lifetime.

At a recap luncheon hosted in their honor by the Cunnington Foundation, the students candidly remarked about the opportunity and what it meant to them and their future. “LAB taught me it is important to set goals. for yourself,” said Tommi Badon.

“This is our future,” Laurie Cunnington, CEO of the Cunnington Foundation told the luncheon attendees. “We think about how we can help Detroit, this is our opportunity.”

Marianna McCoy said, “My parents cried when the acceptance letter arrived at the house. I learned never to take time for granted and that you are never too early to start your future.”

Emphasizing Northwood’s mission to develop future business leaders through programs for middle and high school students, including Learning About Business (LAB), Arnold D’Ambrosio, Vice President of Alumni and Advancement told the students, “The University thinks it’s well worth the investment for what you are going to do tomorrow and for years to come.”

“We see this [event] as people who are committed and winners!” D’Ambrosio told the students. “You are going to touch a lot of people in your life in a very positive way.”

“Being in Midland on Northwood campus was like being the Wizard of Oz,” said another student, “I thought, I’m not in Kansas anymore!” The dream-like opportunity was made possible in combination by Northwood University and donations from various philanthropic groups, including The Cunnington Foundation.

“I’m proud of what Northwood did to step out and provide scholarships for these young people.” said Cunnington.

The Westside Christian Academy students were among 45 students who had the opportunity to “try it on”. This unique learning environment combined business curricula within a real-world simulation, where students competed in teams to design, manufacture and sell their own vehicles.

“I gained knowledge and that knowledge is power,” Kevin told the crowd. “I came back from LAB with knowledge and confidence. I learned how to embrace a different culture.”
