Hancocks Advises Retailers To Stock Up On Medicated Confectionery As Harsh Winter Looms

Loughborough (PRWEB UK) 13 November 2013

It is an inevitable fact that the sales of medicated confectionery peak over the cold, freezing winter months. As colds and flu become more ubiquitous, the sales of cough sweets and throat lozenges increase considerably. With the winter fast approaching, there is no better time for retailers to stock up on medical supplements, cough drops and other cold and flu remedies.

The medicated confectionery business has proven to be an increasingly lucrative one; it is estimated to be worth £86.8m and to be growing at 6.2% year on year. According to Jonathan Summerley, Purchasing Director at confectionery specialists Hancocks, the appeal of medicated sweets is limitless.

“Medicated confectionery has become essential for many Britons, in order to bear the increasingly harsh winter season. The likes of Lockets and Jakemans are cheap and flavoursome solutions to relieve everyday colds and flu.”

Summerley adds, “Consumers can buy these sweets safe in the knowledge that they are ultimately helping them in some way, as they unblock sinuses and offer much needed relief during an often busy day.”

Accordingly, Summerley fully expects Hancocks’ range of medicated sweets to perform extremely well for the wholesaler this winter, with branded sweets from Wrigley’s, Jakemans and Halls all expected to be popular with retailers. Among the branded medicated confectionery Hancocks has in stock are Wrigley’s Lockets, available in three different flavours: the best-selling honey and lemon, cranberry and blueberry and extra strong.

Jakemans Medicated sweets are available in jars and multi-packs. Hancocks can offer Jakemans cherry, throat and chest, eucalyptus and honey and lemon varieties. As for the Halls brand, its launch of the XS line in 2012 was a particularly successful one, leading the company to experience 11% growth (Nielsen data). Alongside the Halls Soothers and Mentholyptus ranges, Hancocks has picked up on Halls’ success by stocking peppermint and lemon Halls XS sugar free cough drops .

Summerley concludes, “Our medicated confectionery range is poised for some high winter sales. We can offer retailers many well-known brands with proven strong winter sales. There is a real need for medicated confectionery as the winter looms and we’d urge all confectionery retailers to cash in on it.”
