“According to the CDC, Hispanics have the longest life expectancy, but based on this poll we are at a tipping point in Hispanic health with risks on the horizon from drinking sugary sodas, not eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day, and lack of access to health care,“ said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health.

The Alliance today released results of the 2014 Healthy Americas Survey, a bilingual phone

survey with a nationally representative sample of 846 respondents fielded from February 16th to

March 2nd of this year. The survey was supported by the Healthy Americas Foundation and a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Key findings included:

Soda Consumption. During the past 30 days, half (53%) of Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks (51%) report drinking sugary soda daily or weekly compared to 37% of non-Hispanic whites.

Fruits and Vegetables. Hispanics (7%) and non-Hispanic blacks (8%) are significantly less likely than non-Hispanic whites (18%) to report eating 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables on average each day.

Usual Source of Care. About one in four (27%) Hispanics report not having a usual place to go to when they are sick or need advice about health compared to 17% of non-Hispanic blacks and 7% of non-Hispanic whites.

Worry About Cost of Care. 40% of Hispanics report that they would be very worried about affording care if they got sick or had an accident compared to 22% of non-Hispanic blacks and 11% of non-Hispanic whites.

“We can do better as a nation in prevention. All communities need access to health insurance, affordable fruits and vegetables, and opportunities for physical activity. We need to give parents tools and support to create a healthier future for themselves and their children. It is an agenda for a Healthy America,” concluded Dr. Delgado.

Randomness And E-mini Trading

Among the most controversial topics in market theory is the degree and level of randomness present in each daily trading session. There are those that deny the random movement of the market, while others believe that all market movement may be random. The truth probably lies somewhere between these two extreme views.

The human mind has a very difficult time dealing with random events. We are genetically programmed to sort and organize events into patterns that are identifiable. Yet randomness in the market is poorly understood, and competing theories have muddied the waters of true comprehension. In my opinion, there is a high degree of randomness in the market; along with some highly organized behavior that also occurs in the market. With a plethora of studies published in recent years on this topic is difficult to come to a definitive conclusion as to which portion of the e-mini market is random and which portions of the market are finite trends. Let’s face it, any experienced trader has observed the market rocket in one direction without rhyme or reason and found himself scratching his head in confusion.

And it’s that confusion in the e-mini markets that causes so many individual e-mini traders to misinterpret market movement and true trending patterns. From my reading, it is my opinion that about 65% of market movement is random in nature, and about 35% of the market movement is organized behavior. This is a difficult concept, as I have mentioned earlier in this article, for most investors to accept. Things happen for a reason, and we are conditioned to interpret most actions in terms of cause and effect. The market defies these traditional notions and a great deal of testing has shown that at times the market moves in a highly random manner.

So how does that affect us as e-mini traders?

From my viewpoint, I think it is important to identify the trending markets and specifically concentrate on trading the market during the periods that it trends. As I have mentioned, this limits most traders who choose to follow this maxim to trading only about one third of the daily trading session. The rest of the time you may find yourself watching the market ping-pong back and forth in a tight range. Generally speaking, range bound trading is a function of normal market operations of filling and backfilling. I specifically avoid any activity in the markets during these range bound periods or during periods the market forms a channel. This channel behavior is generally called a consolidation period.

If you believe the tenants of my belief, it is not difficult to understand how individuals who engage in over-trading often find themselves on the negative side of their futures account. There are only so many times that the market trends sufficiently to initiate trades that stand a chance of earning a respectable profit. On the other hand, channel trading is typified by false breakouts and false breakdowns, which are frustrating and generally result in a losing trade.

In summary, it is difficult to ignore the vast amount of literature that empirically illustrates the random nature of e-mini markets. On the other hand, there is a good deal of evidence that suggests that the market is not entirely random, and periods of trending are not random behavior but organized movement in the market system. For e-mini traders then, the logical conclusion is to focus your trading efforts on those periods when the market is in a trending pattern and avoiding those periods of time when the market is displaying random behavior caused by normal filling and backfilling from the retail sector.

2014 Annual Results – Norbert Dentressangle Reaches a New Milestone in Terms of Size and Globalisation. 3.6% EBITA Margin

Successful integration of the logistics and transport businesses acquired in the United States, with revenue and profit levels in line with expectations, confirming the benefits of the acquisition

Norbert Dentressangle’s CEO Hervé Montjotin commented on the results for 2014: “In accordance with our strategy to become a leading supply chain management partner, in 2014 Norbert Dentressangle reached a new milestone in terms of size by achieving 15.8% growth. As well as attaining a global dimension by becoming the fourth largest logistics operator in the US, we have also strengthened our positioning on key markets such as e-Commerce. The growth in revenues across all our business lines – Logistics, Transport and Air & Sea – was matched by an increase in EBITA, giving us a consolidated EBITA margin of 3.6%. After four months of successful integration of the Logistics and Transport businesses acquired in the US, all performance indicators are in line with our expectations in terms of growth rate and profitability. Revenues: Strong growth and global expansion of business (see attached chart of financial results)

Norbert Dentressangle posted consolidated revenues of €4,669 million for 2014, up 15.8% from 2013. Like-for-like growth amounted to 4.1%. A currency gain of 1.7% was recorded for the year.

Norbert Dentressangle’s globalisation drive continued apace: 64% of Group revenues are now generated outside France. Britain is the second largest country contributor to Group revenue, accounting for 29% of total sales. Following the Jacobson acquisition, the United States is now the third largest contributor. Spain is fourth, with 12% of total revenues and growing fast.

Logistics, now the Group’s No. 1 division, maintained its growth rate and posted revenues of €2,359 million, up 20.9% based on reported data and up 5.7% like for like. Norbert Dentressangle’s Logistics division has acquired truly global stature, with 78% of its revenues now generated outside France.

The Transport division posted 2014 revenues of €2,188 million, up 8.7% based on reported data and up 2.6% like for like. These results were mainly driven by strong momentum in the pallet distribution business. Fourth quarter revenues were impacted by the sharp drop in oil prices, which triggered a corresponding fall in transport service prices.

Air & Sea posted 2014 revenues of €206 million, up 42.2% from 2013 based on reported data and up 2.8% like for like.

EBITDA growth in line with revenue growth

EBITA amounted to €167.9 million, up 18.6% from 2013, providing an EBITA margin of 3.6% compared to 3.5% in the previous year. The Jacobson businesses in the US have boosted the Group’s operating margins: excluding this acquisition would bring the EBITA margin back down to the previous year’s 3.5%.

The Logistics division posted EBITA of €105.2 million, up from €87.4 million in 2013. The division maintained a high EBITA margin of 4.5%, as in 2013. In the Logistics business, Norbert Dentressangle is taking full advantage of its size in the European and US markets and capitalising on its ability to roll out and coordinate a wide range of services specifically geared towards buoyant markets such as e-Commerce, in which it has become one of the leading European experts.

The Transport division posted EBITA of €59.1 million, up from €53 million in 2013. The EBITA margin was 2.7%, up from 2.6% in 2013. The Transport business, and specifically the full load operations, is still very much exposed to the sluggish economic situation in France, particularly with regard to industry and the decline in foreign trade. On the other hand, the pallet distribution business maintained strong momentum throughout the year. The fall in oil prices has not impacted the Transport division’s operating margins.

The Air & Sea division reported EBITA of €3.5 million, up from €1.3 million in 2013. In its fourth year of activity since its launch in 2010, this division achieved an EBITA margin of 1.7%. These figures point to the division’s strong fundamentals, which will continue to drive future growth.

Group net income for 2014 came to €75.9 million, up 8% from €70.1 million in 2013.

A Strong Balance Sheet

Group net debt at 31 December 2014 stood at €1,017 million, up from €456 million at the end of 2013 as a result of the strategic Jacobson acquisition completed during the year. Norbert Dentressangle carried out a €95 million (excluding sale of warehouses ) capital expenditure programme in 2014 in preparation for the future, by renewing operational equipment for the transport business and improving customer support in logistics.

Consolidated net assets (group share) amounted to €691 million.

With a net debt/EBITDA** ratio of 3.0, the Group is in compliance with all of its bank covenants.

Strategic Positioning in the US Transport and Logistics Market

The acquisition of US-based Jacobson, effective on 1 September 2014, has made Norbert Dentressangle the fourth largest logistics operator in this market. The Group now has the scale and resources to take advantage of the considerable growth opportunities offered by this fast-growing market. The new operations were successfully integrated over the fourth quarter of 2014. The consolidated results of the former Jacobson business are in line with expectations in terms of revenues ($ 780 million) and margins (EBITA of $ 61 million), thus confirming the merits of this acquisition.

Dividend

Given the Group’s performance in 2014, the 21 May 2015 General Meeting will be asked to approve a dividend payout of €1.80 per share. The dividend will be paid on 2 June 2015.

Outlook

Bolstered by a strong, tightly controlled financial position and by staff fully focused on driving the performance of its businesses – Logistics, Transport and Air & Sea – Norbert Dentressangle enters 2015 in prime position to grasp opportunities for growth across all of its business lines and operating regions.

Annual Orange County Conference to Draw Hundreds to Vanguard University in the Name of Human Trafficking

One of Orange County’s most rapidly growing forms of crime, human trafficking, will bring hundreds together at the annual Ensure Justice Conference on March 6-7, 2015, held at Vanguard University. The yearly conference is open to the public, registration required.

“A few years ago not many people even knew about human trafficking – now there are more than a thousand organizations undertaking anti-trafficking work. This growing awareness is why the Ensure Justice Conference is so essential for those thousands of practitioners, professionals, community leaders, and emerging student leaders,” said Dr. Sandra Morgan, director of the Global Center for Women and Justice at Vanguard University.

This year’s conference will focus specifically on four principles: coordination, collaboration, capacity, and compassion. Keynote speakers at the Costa Mesa conference will include officials from Homeland Security Investigations, the Orange County Department of Education, and the Orange County Social Service Agency, amongst others. Discussion topics will include anti-human trafficking, trauma-informed victim-centered care, gangs and ways to partner with law enforcement. Expert panels will also address school-based professionals, empowering them to be a safety net, understanding risks to prevent trafficking in local schools.

“School-based professionals are on the front lines, and they can help protect youth from human trafficking when they know what warning signs to look for. It’s vital that education be a partner in this valuable prevention effort,” said Stacy Deeble-Reynolds, prevention coordinator for the Orange County Department of Education, and speaker at this year’s conference.

Attendees of the Ensure Justice Conference will additionally gain a rooted understanding of the nation’s emerging best practices – with top law enforcement, university administrators, health and mental health providers as workshop leaders.

“Justice is not an option for followers of Jesus – it is our faith life,” said Jo Anne Lyon, general superintendent of The Wesleyan Church. “This is our journey of discipleship.” Lyon will also be a featured speaker at the conference.

Officials have estimated 20 to 30 million slaves in the world today. According to the U.S. State Department, 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year. More than 70% are female and half are children. California alone harbors three of the FBI’s 13 highest child sex trafficking areas in the nation: neighboring Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. Human trafficking victims and survivors have been making headlines recently in Orange County, specifically.

How to Use Straightforward Parenting Skills

Unfortunately, I have not found the place that sells parenting skills. It cannot be downloaded from the internet. Parenting skills are acquired over time through experience. The biggest problem is that we tend to replicate how we were raised by our parents. Good or bad, this is not the best way to become a good parent. You have your own individual characteristics and personality coupled with your own strengths and weaknesses. You must learn to parent your own way. An important method to use is rediscovering your inner child or trying to remember what it was like being a child. There will be times when you need to express your disapproval of your child’s actions and attitude, but you do not want to do this in a way that will traumatize your child.

Raising a child is unquestionably a life long commitment. Even after all of your children have grown up and left the house, they will still come to you for guidance. They have to learn that there are consequences for every decision they make. Parenting never stops, whether you realize it or not.

As early as one, your child can start learning independence. You may still think that giving your child what they want is the way to go. Frequently, it is out of your own desire to be liked and sometimes from your own wish that they be spared some of the bad experiences you had as a child. You want to give them the best of everything. This will not achieve anything positive in the long run. Your child will not learn to be responsible and will take advantage of you throughout their life.

Your child, however, should be given acceptance with abundant and unconditional love. You should show your child affection. They tend to be kinder, charitable and best of all responsible. The opposite is true for the parents that gave their children every materialistic want and satisfied every whim. The child becomes immature and selfish. There are several methods you can try. You can put a marble in a jar every time your child starts doing something the first time you ask. When the jar is full, you can have an agreed upon reward that is not monetary. A family outing to the zoo, a trip to Six Flags, any activity that your child will enjoy is better rewards than simply handing him or her money.

If your child wants to argue, do not allow it. You have to remain calm and repeat the rule over and over again. Rules are not up for debate. A timeout is an option, open discussion is for another time. Also, the dinner table is not the place for arguing either. Arguing while eating is physically and emotionally unhealthy. Your goal should be to produce many long lasting good memories while sharing a meal with your family. They should look forward to more of these moments together and enjoying family time. Establish some points or topics for your conversation.

As children, we never wanted ridiculed or scorned. There is no use going back down your own school days and taking it out on your children. Although well intended, helping your child with their homework should be avoided. You will probably find yourself lost and not even understand, since the teaching methods have even changed. Homework is your child’s responsibility. Most parents often think that they know better and that is the biggest part of the problem, we actually don’t. We often disregard ideas simply because of where it originated. Give your child some freedom, so that they can start learning how to be responsible for themselves.

The Rick Herrema Foundation and Environmental Services, Inc. Partner On Environmental Issues To Support Military Family Support Services in North Carolina

With the recent release of the movie American Sniper, filmgoers are learning more about an important issue many military families face. After multiple deployments into dangerous war zones, how do soldiers successfully reintegrate into their military and civilian communities, and most importantly, into their immediate and extended military family upon their return?

A group of military-minded individuals created a 501©(3) non-profit, the Rick Herrema Foundation (RHF), to tackle the issue of military reintegration and military family support services by building a haven called “Rick’s Place.” RHF has partnered with various area businesses, such as Environmental Services, Inc., to begin the development of “Rick’s Place.”

RHF is located on 26 acres of land that is located within five miles of Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina. RHF’s 26-acre campus and its facilities will be open daily and free for military families. The RHF board members plan to offer horseback riding, lake fishing, family gardening plots, an indoor/outdoor playground, a splash pad, art opportunities, and nature trails at this time. A custom-designed modern lodge, will feature a coffee shop, grilling areas, fire pits, outdoor seating and community meeting space. This experience is designed to inspire an atmosphere of relaxation and rejuvenation at the campus, called “Rick’s Place,” and to honor the sacrifice of our military families who continue to deploy in defense of our nation

RHF board members randomly surveyed over 650 military families stationed at Ft. Bragg and they have confirmed the need for the creation of “Rick’s Place” near their homes. When RHF raises the dollars needed for the construction of the facilities, it will be able to provide services to between 1000-1200 military families per month. Currently in a fundraising phase, RHF is moving forward with a variety of community business partners that are volunteering their services.

One of these business partners is Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI). ESI operates out of nine U.S. offices and its team works regionally, nationally and internationally. ESI’s professional environmental consultants provide successful solutions for environmental, natural, cultural and sustainable resource needs in private and public sectors (http://www.esinc.cc).

Recognizing a need for help from ESI’s Raleigh Ecology Services Division, ESI’s Caitlin Sellers asked fellow employee and Ecology project manager Robert Turnbull to become involved in this project. After receiving an enthusiastic “thumbs up” from ESI’s Raleigh office manager Kevin Markham, Turnbull reports that ESI began providing services in 2014 to the Rick Herrema Foundation for the development of their property in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Specifically, to date, ESI has provided a jurisdictional delineation and preliminary coordination with regulatory agencies. Turnbull expects to help with the federal and state permitting process throughout 2015.

In addition, Turnbull asked Thomas S. Speight, Jr., PE, PLS, Associate Partner at Bateman Civil Survey Company in Holly Springs, North Carolina to become involved in this effort. They have generously provided their services to RHF, as well.

According to RHS Board member and Special Forces Green Beret Officer, Major Tom Willis, “We know that our Nation’s military members, and especially their families, sacrifice a great deal in service to rest of us. “Rick’s Place” is our way to give back to them by providing a convenient, accessible, and free place to rejuvenate marriage and parent-child relationships.
